Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Argentine left-back Valentin Barco from Strasbourg, a club under the same ownership group as the Blues, on a long-term deal. The transfer was reported as completed by Argentine journalist German Garcia Grova of TyC Sports, and follows the earlier agreement for striker Emmanuel Emegha to join from the same club.
Barco, 21, previously had a spell with Brighton & Hove Albion but made limited impact during his time in England. His acquisition represents a relatively straightforward deal due to the shared ownership structure between Chelsea and Strasbourg. The club is also reportedly pursuing Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall as further reinforcement at left-back.
Hall, also 21, originally came through Chelsea’s academy before being loaned to Newcastle last season, with the loan containing an obligation to buy for £28 million. He has since established himself as a key player for the Magpies, and Chelsea are now attempting to “rectify a mistake” by bringing him back to Stamford Bridge. However, Newcastle are unlikely to let Hall leave easily, given his current contract extends to 2029.
According to Chelsea reporter Si Phillips, internal discussions regarding a move for Hall are already underway. Newcastle may be open to selling players to fund a squad rebuild, but reportedly prefer to sell Anthony Gordon over Hall. The potential cost of re-signing Hall is expected to be significant, reflecting his increased value and importance to Newcastle’s team.
The arrival of Barco and the pursuit of Hall signal Chelsea’s intent to strengthen their defensive options under new manager Xabi Alonso, who will officially begin his role on July 1st. These moves suggest a proactive approach to squad building as the club prepares for the upcoming season.
