Chelsea have identified Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix as a ‘main target’ to bolster their squad this summer, according to The Athletic. The Blues are shifting their transfer strategy to prioritize experienced players who have proven themselves in top European leagues.
This change in approach comes after a period of focusing on young, relatively unproven talent from around the world. Chelsea are reportedly seeking at least two ‘ready-made’ players with experience at the highest level, leading to their interest in the 26-year-old Lacroix. He joined Crystal Palace in 2024 for a fee of €20 million and has quickly established himself as a key component of their defensive line.
Despite his importance to Palace, the club are understood to be open to considering offers for Lacroix if a suitable replacement can be found. Lacroix is one of three or four defensive options currently being evaluated by Chelsea, who view strengthening the backline as a priority following the recent sale of Marc Cucurella earlier this month. Palace currently have Lacroix under contract for another three years, which may complicate any potential negotiations.
Chelsea’s defensive overhaul may extend beyond Lacroix, with Trevoh Chalobah attracting interest from Como, although a significant gap remains in the clubs’ valuations, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. The futures of Wesley Fofana, Aaron Anselmino, and Mamadou Sarr are also uncertain, while Benoit Badiashile and Axel Disasi are expected to be sold to facilitate further incomings. The club’s absence from European competition next season will likely necessitate streamlining the squad before significant investment can occur.
Valentin Barco is anticipated to join from Strasbourg, Chelsea’s affiliate club, though the deal is not yet finalized. Sporting’s Geovany Quenda is also expected to arrive next month to add depth to the squad. The potential arrival of Lacroix, alongside these other targets, signals a clear intent from Chelsea to rebuild their defence under incoming manager Xabi Alonso.
