Marc Cucurella has completed a transfer to Real Madrid from Chelsea for a reported fee of €55m, with an additional €5m in potential add-ons, bringing the total package to €60m. The 27-year-old left-back has signed a six-year contract with Los Blancos and will join the squad following Spain’s participation in the 2026 World Cup.
According to Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein, Real Madrid successfully intervened in advanced negotiations between Chelsea and both Atlético Madrid and Barcelona to secure Cucurella’s signature. The transfer marks one of the first significant signings under newly appointed manager José Mourinho, with Sky Sports reporting the Portuguese coach identified Cucurella as a priority target.
Cucurella expressed his enthusiasm for the move in an interview with El Mundo, stating he had “no doubts” about joining Real Madrid, describing the opportunity as “unique” and an “honour.” He acknowledged the existence of other options but emphasized that playing for Real Madrid was a decisive factor in his decision-making process.
Having spent the last four seasons at Chelsea, where he made over 160 appearances and won the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup, Cucurella returns to La Liga after five years in England. He previously progressed through Barcelona’s La Masia academy before leaving the club permanently in 2020, spending time on loan at Eibar and Getafe.
Addressing Barcelona supporters, Cucurella acknowledged the sensitivity of a La Masia graduate joining their rivals, stating that life presents different stages and he made the decision without hesitation. He highlighted the ambition driving his choice, emphasizing the support of his family in pursuing this “big step” in his career.
The signing addresses a positional need for Mourinho, providing experienced cover and competition at left-back. Real Madrid’s investment of approximately €60m on a full-back, alongside a rejected €150m bid for Julián Álvarez, demonstrates the ambitious scale of Mourinho’s rebuilding project. The arrival of Cucurella represents a key component in reshaping the squad.
For Barcelona, missing out on Cucurella to their biggest rivals is a significant setback. It remains to be seen whether Hansi Flick’s side will prioritize filling the left-back position in the current transfer window. Cucurella’s official presentation at the Bernabéu is anticipated after the conclusion of Spain’s World Cup campaign, at which point Mourinho’s tactical plans for the player will become clearer.
