Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella has publicly addressed speculation surrounding his future at Stamford Bridge, revealing he is ‘attracted’ by new manager Xabi Alonso’s project. The 27-year-old Spain international has been linked with a return to La Liga, with Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, and Real Madrid all reportedly interested in securing his services.
Cucurella joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2021 for a reported fee of €45.9 million. While he initially established himself as a key player, his form has fluctuated, leading to questions about his long-term future at the club. He has become a senior player within the squad, alongside Enzo Fernandez, who have both been associated with potential moves away this summer.
Speaking to Marca, Cucurella stated he is currently focused on representing Spain and enjoying his first World Cup experience. He emphasized his happiness in London with his family, adding, “I'm not reading much and I'm not paying much attention… Whatever happens, happens.” However, he did acknowledge holding conversations with Alonso, expressing the confidence the new Chelsea manager instilled in him.
“Yes. I've spoken with him and he inspired a lot of confidence in me,” Cucurella said. He also revealed conversations with former Alonso players Alejandro Grimaldo and Borja Mayoral, who spoke highly of the manager’s approach. This suggests a genuine consideration of remaining at Chelsea under the new leadership.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has corroborated Cucurella’s stance, stating the player will not force a move. Romano noted Atletico Madrid’s strong interest, alongside potential consideration from Barcelona, but emphasized there are currently no official bids. Reports in Spain, however, suggest Cucurella views his time at Chelsea as ‘completely over’ and is seeking a transfer, provided an acceptable offer is received.
Chelsea are reportedly exploring potential replacements should Cucurella depart, with Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso identified as a possible upgrade. The situation remains fluid, with Cucurella’s future likely to become clearer following the conclusion of the World Cup and further discussions with the club and potential suitors. A move could provide Alonso with funds to further reshape the Chelsea squad.
