Botafogo midfielder Danilo has publicly suggested that Manchester United should consider signing him this summer, citing his current form and readiness for a return to European football. The 25-year-old has impressed in Brazil over the past year following a less successful spell at Nottingham Forest.
Danilo’s strong performances have earned him a place in Brazil’s squad for the upcoming World Cup, displacing other midfield options including the recently signed Manchester United player, Ederson. He believes he is now prepared for another opportunity in a top European league. The midfielder recently withdrew from a Botafogo match due to a minor ankle injury, a decision that drew criticism but was made to avoid jeopardising his World Cup chances and potential transfer.
Botafogo are likely to be forced into sales this summer to address financial difficulties stemming from the departure of former owner John Textor. The club are hoping a successful World Cup campaign for Danilo will attract bids in the region of €40 million. Both Arsenal and Manchester United have been linked with the player in recent weeks, with United reportedly already conducting preliminary scouting.
Danilo has reflected on his career trajectory, acknowledging that his move back to Brazil from Forest was initially perceived as a setback. He explained to Globo that the move was necessary to regain form and confidence after a serious injury disrupted his time in England. He stated that the experience ultimately proved beneficial, allowing him to rediscover his best football and earn a place in the national team setup.
He highlighted his versatility as a key asset, noting his ability to play multiple midfield positions – as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder, and attacking midfielder – a skill developed from his early career as an attacker. This adaptability, he believes, makes him a valuable asset for both teammates and coaches. Manchester United are reportedly prioritising squad depth as they prepare for their return to the Champions League, and at €40 million, Danilo appears to fit their desired profile. While not a marquee signing, he could provide valuable quality in midfield.
