Roberto De Zerbi has been appointed as the new manager of Tottenham Hotspur, the club confirmed on Tuesday. The Italian coach arrives at the Premier League club following a period at Brighton & Hove Albion, where he earned praise for his attacking style of play and development of young players.
De Zerbi departed Brighton at the end of the 2023-24 season, having guided them to an 11th-place finish. During his time with the Seagulls, he oversaw impressive victories against several top-flight opponents, establishing a reputation as one of the league’s most promising managers. His methods at Brighton involved a focus on possession-based football and a willingness to give opportunities to emerging talents.
Prior to his spell in England, De Zerbi managed Sassuolo and Shakhtar Donetsk, gaining experience in both Serie A and European competition. He previously managed Marseille for a brief period, where he became known for motivational speeches emphasizing club pride and dignity over trophies—a tactic he has since revisited at Tottenham, attempting to inspire his players.
Tottenham have been seeking a permanent manager since the departure of Ange Postecoglou, who left to take the Australia national team job. The club finished fifth in the Premier League this past season, securing a Europa League spot, but the board evidently felt a change in leadership was necessary to push for Champions League qualification. De Zerbi’s appointment signals an intent to play a more expansive and attacking brand of football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Reports suggest De Zerbi's arrival was expedited by a desire to quickly implement his tactical vision ahead of the new season. The club hopes his experience in developing players and creating a distinct playing style will translate into sustained success. This appointment is expected to lead to significant changes in the squad, with De Zerbi likely to identify targets who fit his system.
