Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo believes Lazio can overcome the odds and defeat Inter in tonight’s Coppa Italia final, despite Inter’s recent league form and 3-0 victory over Lazio last weekend. Speaking to an Italian outlet, Di Matteo acknowledged Inter’s status as favorites, citing their Scudetto win and strong squad, but emphasized the unpredictable nature of a final. He praised Maurizio Sarri for guiding Lazio to the decisive match despite a challenging season, highlighting the team’s unity and the quality of goalkeeper Ivan Provedel.
Di Matteo also discussed Inter’s successful season, praising Simone Inzaghi’s leadership and the team’s ability to navigate difficult periods without internal conflict. He specifically lauded the impact of Inter coach Cristian Chivu in his first year managing a top club, noting that Chivu’s extensive international playing experience has equipped him to handle the pressures of the role. However, when pressed, Di Matteo admitted he is hoping for a Lazio victory.
Looking at the broader landscape of Italian football, Di Matteo pointed to a significant financial disparity between Serie A and other top European leagues like the Premier League, La Liga, and the Bundesliga, making it difficult for Italian clubs to compete at the highest level in Europe. He suggested that investment in infrastructure and competent leadership are crucial for improving the state of Italian football. He also acknowledged Inter’s recent success in reaching two Champions League finals under Inzaghi, but cautioned that this may have been a cyclical achievement.
Di Matteo also commented on Sarri’s potential move to Napoli, stating that speculation is rife but acknowledging Sarri’s dedication to his craft and ability to improve players. He suggested it would be a loss for Lazio if Sarri were to depart, recognizing his value to the team. The former Chelsea boss also reflected on his own playing style, drawing comparisons between his time under Zdenek Zeman and the current Lazio setup, noting that his former team was more reckless, while Sarri’s side is more balanced.
