Ivory Coast defender Yan Diomande has stated he anticipates leaving RB Leipzig this summer, fueling speculation linking him with a move to Paris Saint-Germain. The 19-year-old made the comments during a press conference ahead of his nation’s World Cup round of 32 match against Norway, despite recent assurances from the Bundesliga club that they intend to retain his services.
RB Leipzig managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer recently dismissed the growing links between Diomande and PSG, asserting the club has no plans to allow the young centre-back to depart during the current transfer window. However, Diomande’s public statement casts doubt on those claims and suggests a potential breakdown in communication between player and club. He indicated he is relying on his agent to manage any potential transfer negotiations.
Diomande joined Leipzig from Swiss side FC Lausanne-Sport in January 2023, quickly establishing himself as a promising talent in the Bundesliga. He made 13 appearances for Leipzig across all competitions last season, demonstrating his potential with a series of composed performances. His emergence has attracted attention from several top European clubs, with PSG emerging as the most prominent suitor.
The defender explained his decision to deactivate his social media accounts, stating he wanted to avoid distractions during the World Cup. He emphasized his focus remains on representing his country and achieving success in the tournament. Diomande’s participation in the World Cup could potentially raise his profile further and accelerate any potential transfer.
While a transfer fee has not been disclosed, PSG’s financial resources would allow them to meet Leipzig’s valuation of the player. Should Diomande move to Paris, he would likely compete with Marquinhos, Presnel Kimpembe, and Danilo Pereira for a starting position in the PSG defence. The potential arrival of Diomande would further bolster PSG’s squad as they aim to compete for both domestic and European honours.
