Domenico Tedesco has been officially appointed as the new head coach of Bologna, signing a contract with the Serie A club until June 30, 2028. The 38-year-old arrived at Bologna’s Marconi Airport on Tuesday morning and was greeted by sporting director Marco Di Vaio, according to reports from Italian news sources.
Tedesco’s appointment comes after his recent departure from Turkish side Fenerbahçe, where he was relieved of his duties on April 27th. Prior to his time in Turkey, the Italian-German manager gained recognition for his successful spells with Schalke 04 and RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga. He led Schalke to a surprising second-place finish in the 2018-19 season, and guided Leipzig to a DFB-Pokal victory in 2022.
The coach, born in Rossano, Italy but raised in Germany, has also managed the Belgian national team, although his tenure was relatively short-lived. He inherits a Bologna side that finished seventh in Serie A last season, securing a spot in the UEFA Europa Conference League. This represents a strong foundation for Tedesco to build upon, and the club will be hoping he can elevate them further up the league table.
Tedesco was photographed arriving at the club’s headquarters wearing a Bologna scarf, signalling his immediate commitment to the project. The club has scheduled a formal press conference for Thursday at 11:00 local time, where Tedesco will be officially presented to the media. The length of the contract suggests Bologna has full confidence in Tedesco’s ability to deliver sustained success. This appointment signals Bologna's ambition to establish themselves as a consistent force in Italian football.
Bologna’s decision to pursue Tedesco indicates a desire for a proactive and tactically astute manager, qualities he demonstrated during his time in Germany. The club will be looking for Tedesco to implement his distinct tactical approach and further develop the existing squad, potentially challenging for European qualification in the coming seasons.
