Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the permanent signing of Croatian defender Luka Vušković from Tottenham Hotspur for a fee of €53million, with a potential for a further €5million in bonuses. The Seagulls confirmed the deal earlier today, bringing the 21-year-old to the Amex Stadium on a long-term contract. Vušković spent last season on loan at Hamburger SV, where he established himself as a key player, but Brighton were able to secure his signature despite HSV’s desire to retain him.
Vušković joined Tottenham in January 2024, but was immediately loaned to the German second tier with HSV. He quickly became a regular in the side, making 31 appearances across all competitions and earning praise for his composure and defensive abilities. His performances for HSV reportedly attracted interest from several clubs, but Brighton moved swiftly to secure his services, beating out competition from other Premier League sides. The fee represents a significant investment for Brighton, but reflects the club’s ambition to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
The move reunites Vušković with Brighton’s new head coach Fabian Hürzeler, who previously managed FC St. Pauli. Hürzeler expressed his delight at securing the signing, stating that the club had been closely following Vušković’s progress. “Luka has had a fantastic start to his career – we have been closely following his progress,” Hürzeler said. “Last season he proved that he can play at a very high level, and we want to support him in building on that in our environment.”
Hürzeler also cautioned patience with the young defender, acknowledging the challenges of adapting to the Premier League. “There was a lot of hype surrounding his move to us, but he is still a young player who needs time to adapt to the demands of Brighton and the Premier League,” he added. Brighton have been active in the transfer market this summer, and the addition of Vušković further strengthens their defensive options. The signing provides competition for existing centre-backs and offers Hürzeler tactical flexibility as he looks to build a competitive squad. This acquisition signals Brighton’s intent to continue developing young talent and challenging in the top flight.
HSV were reportedly unable to afford the €53million fee, making a permanent transfer impossible. The Croatian international will now look to establish himself as a key player in the Premier League and contribute to Brighton’s continued success.
