SC Freiburg have announced the signing of goalkeeper Mio Backhaus from SV Werder Bremen, with the 22-year-old set to join the club ahead of the 2026/27 season. The transfer sees Backhaus move to the Breisgau Arena after a breakthrough season in the Bundesliga with Bremen. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed by either club.
Backhaus established himself as a regular starter for Werder Bremen during the 2023/24 campaign, making 26 appearances in the Bundesliga and demonstrating considerable potential. He joined Bremen’s youth setup in 2018, progressing through the ranks before earning his professional debut in 2022. His performances for Bremen have drawn attention from several clubs, but Backhaus ultimately chose Freiburg as his next destination.
Freiburg’s board member Jochen Saier praised Backhaus’s composure and ability, stating that he “made a real impression in his first Bundesliga season and showed the level he is already capable of playing at.” Saier also highlighted Backhaus’s well-rounded skillset and potential for further development, adding that he will integrate well into the existing goalkeeping department. Freiburg already boast a strong goalkeeping contingent, and the addition of Backhaus is expected to provide further competition for places.
Backhaus himself expressed his enthusiasm about the move, stating that the opportunity “felt like the perfect fit” for him. He cited the club’s atmosphere, the city of Freiburg, and the style of football played as key factors in his decision. The player also expressed his desire to achieve success with the team, indicating a strong commitment to his new club.
The signing of Backhaus strengthens Freiburg’s squad depth and provides a long-term solution in the goalkeeping position, potentially setting the stage for a sustained period of success in the Bundesliga.
