Barcelona's Goalkeeping Future Hinges on Ter Stegen Decision
Barcelona's plans for their goalkeeping department this summer are set to be dictated by the future of Marc-Andre ter Stegen, with Wojciech Szczesny's role at the club hanging in the balance. According to reports from Sport, the club is in a holding pattern regarding its backup goalkeeper, with the Polish international's future directly tied to the German number one.
The 35-year-old Szczesny, who joined the club on a free transfer in 2025, has served as a reliable deputy during an injury crisis. He played a crucial role in the club's La Liga and Copa del Rey double last season, stepping in for the injured Ter Stegen. This season, he has made 10 appearances, primarily covering for the also-injured backup, Joan Garcia. The club's technical staff, including goalkeeping coach Jose Ramon de la Fuente, are reportedly happy with his contributions.
However, Szczesny's continuity at the Camp Nou is not guaranteed. Barcelona holds an option to terminate his contract this summer, with his current deal having one year remaining. The final decision on his future is not based on his own performances, but on the future of the club's first-choice goalkeeper. According to the report, the club's hierarchy is content with Szczesny's contributions and would be happy to keep him as a backup for another season.
The pivotal factor is the future of Marc-Andre ter Stegen. The German goalkeeper has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons, limiting his availability. He remains on a significant, long-term contract. If Ter Stegen decides to stay and fight for his place, the club would likely keep Szczesny as the number two. However, if Ter Stegen were to seek a transfer or a new challenge, Szczesny could be retained as the primary competition for Garcia or a new signing.
Sporting Director Deco is also exploring other options. The club has considered promoting 20-year-old youth prospect Diego Kochen, but the 20-year-old may not be deemed ready for a consistent first-team role. The club's primary target for the backup role is reportedly Real Sociedad's Alex Remiro, although that move is considered a lower priority and is financially dependent on other business being completed first. The final decision on Szczesny, therefore, is a complex piece of a larger puzzle involving Ter Stegen's future, the development of Kochen, and the club's overall financial and sporting strategy for the upcoming transfer window.
