Leeds United are increasingly confident of securing Shea Charles from Southampton this week, with negotiations ongoing to agree a transfer fee. The Whites have received a positive indication they can sign the Northern Ireland international as their first addition of the summer transfer window.
Leeds are aiming to bolster their squad following a successful return to the Premier League, finishing 14th and reaching the FA Cup semi-finals last season under manager Daniel Farke. The club’s board recognises the need for continued investment to maintain their progress and are reportedly targeting five to six new signings during the current window.
Charles has emerged as a primary target, and while an initial bid of £20 million was rejected, sources indicate an agreement is nearing completion. The 22-year-old’s current contract with Southampton is set to expire in twelve months, potentially influencing the Saints’ willingness to negotiate. He progressed through the Manchester City academy, joining at the age of seven, before moving to Southampton.
Charles has also reportedly expressed his desire to join Leeds and return to the Premier League, following Southampton’s relegation to the Championship after being excluded from the play-offs due to a points deduction. The midfielder has earned 35 caps for Northern Ireland, demonstrating his international experience. His arrival would provide competition and depth in midfield for Leeds.
Beyond Charles, Leeds are also pursuing other targets, including Germany international Julian Brandt, who is a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Borussia Dortmund. However, they face competition from several clubs, including those offering Champions League football. Similarly, the club remains in talks for Fulham’s Harry Wilson, another free agent, but face competition from Everton, Aston Villa, and Fenerbahce. Leeds are also seeking a new goalkeeper, a striker, and a left-sided defender as they continue to reshape their squad for the upcoming season.
