Bayer Leverkusen have made a €32 million offer for Olympique Lyonnais winger Afonso Moreira, according to L’Équipe. The potential sale is driven by Lyon’s need to meet financial obligations before a review by the DNCG, the French football financial regulator, at the end of June.
Moreira, 21, joined Lyon eleven months ago from the Sporting Portugal reserve team for a fee of just €2 million. His rapid development into a key player for Paulo Fonseca’s side has significantly increased his value, making him an attractive option for Leverkusen. The Portuguese international recently extended his contract with Lyon until 2030, indicating a previous desire to remain with the club.
Initially, Lyon had planned to sell Tanner Tessmann and Malick Fofana to raise funds, but interest in those players has not materialized to the extent the club hoped. While there were inquiries from English clubs regarding Fofana, Leverkusen’s swift and substantial offer for Moreira has shifted the club’s priorities. Moreira himself has expressed a desire to compete in the Champions League with Lyon, but the club may attempt to persuade him of the benefits of a move.
Should the transfer go through, Lyon will be required to pay 20% of the profit to Sporting Portugal, amounting to €6 million based on the reported €32 million fee. The funds generated from Moreira’s sale would alleviate financial pressure on Lyon and ensure compliance with DNCG regulations. The club is also in negotiations with Borussia Dortmund to purchase Julien Duranville, a 20-year-old winger, as a potential replacement for Moreira, though talks remain ongoing with Dortmund seeking over €8 million for the player.
Lyon have not commented on either transfer, stating they are focused on the DNCG review and the return of the squad for pre-season training on June 29th. The potential arrival of Duranville would fill a similar role to Fofana, while Leverkusen would add a promising young talent to their squad.
