Ralf Rangnick has turned down an offer to become the new manager of AC Milan after his requests for significant control over the club were not met, according to reports from Italy. The German manager reportedly sought complete authority over the sporting direction of Milan, including control of the Milanello training center and the ability to bring in a team of trusted assistants.
Rangnick’s ambitions included full autonomy in decision-making, resisting any interference in his project. While these demands were viewed as excessive by some, it is understood that Milan owner Gerry Cardinale initially approached Rangnick and encouraged him to outline his vision. However, these plans clashed with the influence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who serves as a senior advisor to the ownership.
Ibrahimovic, despite not holding a formal position within the club’s organizational structure, is reportedly seeking to have a significant say in decisions. This has led to speculation that Ibrahimovic is pushing for the appointment of Milan Futuro’s Kirovski as the new sporting director, aiming to address the current stagnation in the transfer market. Kirovski has been involved in minor movements in the market, while the search for a new coach has consumed the club’s resources.
The managerial search itself has become increasingly complex. Oliver Glasner, who had been considered the frontrunner for the position, is reportedly seeking clarity from the club while keeping his options open with Feyenoord. Recent reports suggest Milan has also held discussions with Matthias Jaissle, whose age aligns with the profile of a younger coach favored by Cardinale. Jaissle’s arrival would require Milan to pay compensation to his current club, Al-Ahli, but this is not seen as a significant obstacle. Rúben Amorim, previously linked with Manchester United, remains a potential candidate.
This situation highlights a power struggle within the club, with Ibrahimovic seemingly asserting his influence over the direction of the team. The lack of progress in securing a new manager and sporting director raises questions about the club’s preparation for the upcoming season.
