Ole Werner’s position as RB Leipzig manager is increasingly precarious, with the club’s board reportedly favouring an immediate dismissal, according to Sky Germany. The situation surrounding Werner has been subject to speculation for some time, but reporting from Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg indicates the pressure on the coach has intensified significantly.
Plettenberg claims Werner’s job is “more uncertain than ever”, suggesting a growing disconnect between the manager and key decision-makers at the Bundesliga club. This development places managing director for sport Marcel Schäfer in a difficult position, as he has previously been a strong advocate for Werner, even contemplating a contract extension beyond the current agreement which runs until 2027.
Werner joined RB Leipzig from Werder Bremen last summer and oversaw a commendable third-place finish in the Bundesliga during his debut season. Prior to taking the role at Leipzig, Werner had established himself as a promising young coach at Bremen, guiding them to promotion back to the Bundesliga and stabilizing their position in the top flight. His appointment at Leipzig was viewed as a long-term project, aiming to build on the club’s established success.
The reasons for the apparent shift in opinion within the RB Leipzig board have not been explicitly stated, though recent performances and results are likely contributing factors. Leipzig currently sit in fourth place in the Bundesliga, but have been inconsistent throughout the season, failing to fully capitalize on their attacking potential. A change in manager could signal a desire for a more immediate impact and a different tactical approach.
Schäfer’s previous support for Werner suggests he will carefully consider all options before making a final decision, weighing the potential benefits of stability against the perceived need for change. Should Werner be relieved of his duties, RB Leipzig will begin the search for a new manager capable of challenging Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen for the Bundesliga title. The club’s ambition remains high, and they will seek a coach who can deliver consistent results and Champions League qualification.
