FSV Mainz 05 have begun discussions with Como regarding the potential extension of Stefan Posch’s loan deal, according to Sky Germany. The Bundesliga club are keen to retain the Austrian defender beyond the current agreement, which is set to expire in June. Currently, there is no option to buy included in the existing loan terms.
Posch joined Mainz in late January and quickly established himself as a key figure in the team, accumulating over 1,395 minutes of playing time and contributing to three clean sheets. His strong performances in the second half of the season have reportedly convinced the club to pursue a longer-term arrangement. The 29-year-old primarily plays as a central defender, a position where Mainz may see a continued need for reinforcement.
However, any permanent deal or extended loan will depend on negotiations with Como, who signed Posch in the summer of 2023. The Serie A club currently holds significant leverage, as the player’s contract with them runs until 2029. This lengthy contract provides Como with a strong negotiating position should other clubs also express interest.
Sources indicate that several unnamed clubs have already made enquiries about Posch’s availability, suggesting competition for his signature. While a return to Como remains a possibility, Mainz are hoping to present a compelling offer to secure his services. Posch previously played in the Bundesliga for Hoffenheim, making over 100 appearances for the club before his move to Italy. He has also been a regular feature in the Austrian national team, earning 16 caps.
The outcome of these talks could significantly impact Mainz’s defensive options for the upcoming season, while Como will assess whether to capitalize on the interest in a player who has demonstrated his quality in a top-five European league.
