AC Milan are nearing a decision on their next head coach and technical director, with Oliver Glasner and Ralf Rangnick emerging as the leading candidates. Glasner, after extensive talks with owner Gerry Cardinale and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, is reportedly eager to take charge, viewing Milan as an ideal step forward in his career. He hopes to build on his recent successes, having won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt and the FA Cup, Community Shield, and Conference League with Crystal Palace.
Rangnick, however, is seeking a broader role as the club’s technical director and wants significant control over personnel decisions, including the appointment of a sporting director and the selection of players. He is currently managing the Austrian national team but would consider leaving the post for the right project. According to reports, Rangnick has a strong relationship with David Alaba, the Austrian defender recently released by Real Madrid, and sees him as a potential key addition to the squad, potentially becoming a similar influence to Luka Modrić.
Glasner presented a detailed analysis of the current Milan squad to Cardinale and Ibrahimovic, outlining his vision for a high-pressing, intense style of play, distinct from the approach of previous manager Stefano Pioli. While acknowledging the need for time to implement his system, Glasner emphasized his track record of improving team performances over time. Cardinale is reportedly committed to supporting whichever coach is chosen, having changed managers four times since Spring 2024.
Alaba, despite a recent history of injuries including a cruciate ligament tear and meniscus issues, is considered a valuable asset due to his experience and leadership qualities. He has also been linked with Inter, presenting a potential derby battle for his signature. Rangnick’s project hinges on bringing in trusted personnel, with Johannes Spors identified as his preferred sporting director, although the club has also held discussions with Devin Ozek. A second meeting between Glasner and the Milan hierarchy is anticipated imminently, potentially finalizing his appointment.
