Monaco are set to sign Sadibou Sané from Metz in a deal worth €7 million, with a further €3 million in potential bonuses, according to L’Équipe. The 21-year-old Senegalese defender will undergo a medical this week, with the transfer expected to be finalised in the coming days. Sané will sign a five-year contract with the Principality club.
This move comes after a month of negotiations between the two Ligue 1 sides. Metz will receive a total of up to €10 million for the player, representing a significant fee for a club that often relies on developing and selling talent. Sané established himself as a regular in the Metz starting eleven last season, making 34 appearances across all competitions, and demonstrating considerable potential in a relatively short space of time.
Monaco have been looking to strengthen their defensive options ahead of the new season, and Sané fits the profile of a young, athletic centre-back with room for development. The club’s ability to complete the deal was contingent on a few factors, including the potential sale of Brazilian left-back Caio Henrique to Ajax for a reported €13 million, plus €3 million in bonuses and a 25% sell-on clause, as also reported by L’Équipe.
The sale of Henrique will help Monaco comply with financial regulations set by the DNCG, the French football league’s financial fair play body, which has been closely monitoring the club’s wage bill. Monaco were recently instructed to operate under stricter financial constraints, making player sales necessary to balance their accounts. The successful completion of both deals will provide Monaco with greater financial flexibility as they continue to reshape their squad under head coach Adi Hütter. This transfer strengthens Monaco’s backline and provides Sané with a platform to further his development within a club aiming for European qualification.
