FC Schalke 04 are in negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion regarding a loan deal for centre-back Igor Julio, according to Fussballdaten. The newly promoted Bundesliga side are seeking to reinforce their defensive options ahead of the upcoming season. Discussions are currently underway between the two clubs, though an agreement has not yet been reached.
Schalke’s interest comes following their successful promotion back to the Bundesliga, and a desire to build a competitive squad capable of maintaining their top-flight status. The Royal Blues are reportedly keen on securing Julio on an initial loan with an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season. The primary obstacles in the negotiations currently revolve around the loan fee and the financial terms of the potential purchase option.
Brighton signed Julio from Fiorentina in 2023 for a reported fee of €16.5 million. The 28-year-old Brazilian has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter for the Seagulls, however, and spent the first half of the 2025-26 season on loan at West Ham United. That move proved unsuccessful, as Julio saw limited playing time and returned to Brighton in January.
Despite his lack of consistent minutes, Julio possesses experience playing in top European leagues, having also featured for Fiorentina in Serie A. Schalke will hope a more prominent role in the Bundesliga can revitalize his career. If a deal is struck, Julio would provide competition and depth in Schalke’s central defence, potentially partnering with other existing players to form a new defensive pairing. The move could offer Julio the consistent game time he needs to rediscover his form and prove his value.
