West Ham United have confirmed that Nuno Espírito Santo will remain as the club’s manager for the upcoming season, following their relegation to the Championship. The announcement comes as West Ham prepare for a significant rebuild after finishing bottom of the Premier League.
The club communicated the decision via social media, stating they were pleased to confirm Espírito Santo’s continued commitment, mirroring their own support for the Portuguese coach. He initially joined West Ham in December, replacing David Moyes, after a strained relationship with owner Evángelos Marinákis at Nottingham Forest led to his departure.
Espírito Santo’s previous managerial success in the Championship with Wolverhampton Wanderers has been highlighted, with the club noting he secured 99 points during his last campaign in the league. This experience is viewed as a positive sign as West Ham aim to achieve promotion back to the Premier League at the earliest opportunity.
However, the confirmation of Espírito Santo’s position is just one piece of a larger puzzle for the West Ham board. The club are reportedly facing a need to generate approximately €160 million in player sales this summer to balance their finances. Retaining Espírito Santo may help with squad retention, but could also potentially lead to player departures, particularly given recent criticism from the wife of goalkeeper Alphonse Areola regarding the manager’s tactics.
His tenure at Tottenham Hotspur remains the highest point of his managerial career to date. The club faces a busy summer transfer window as they attempt to reshape the squad for a promotion push.
