Como sporting director Mirwan Suwarso has confirmed that Cesc Fabregas has turned down offers from other clubs to remain with the Serie A side, as they prepare for their unexpected Champions League campaign. The club secured a Champions League spot, exceeding expectations, and Suwarso emphasized the need to remain grounded despite the achievement.
Suwarso revealed that Como received three offers for Fabregas last year, all of which were rejected, and this year the player himself informed the club he had declined proposals from unnamed clubs. Fabregas’s commitment is seen as crucial to Como’s ambitions, with Suwarso highlighting the midfielder’s winning mentality and influence within the squad. He described a simple exchange of smiles between the pair following qualification, signifying a shared understanding of the work ahead.
Como are anticipating playing their Champions League home matches at the Stadio Sinigaglia, despite previous concerns about its suitability following their promotion to Serie A. Suwarso expressed confidence that the stadium will meet UEFA requirements, mirroring their successful navigation of similar challenges previously. The club is also considering potential opponents, with Suwarso expressing excitement at the prospect of facing Manchester United or Real Madrid at their home ground.
Regarding potential new signings, Como are not currently pursuing Federico Chiesa or Andrea Cambiaso, as their valuations fall outside the club’s price range. While the club maintains good relations with Real Madrid, there are no ongoing discussions regarding players, although they are monitoring the situation of Nico Paz, currently on loan from the Spanish giants. Como’s transfer strategy will prioritize opportunities that align with the coach’s vision, rather than focusing on nationality, and the club is also investing in its youth academy to develop homegrown talent. Suwarso also confirmed the club is financially stable and will adhere to UEFA’s financial sustainability regulations. He dismissed any immediate talk of a Scudetto challenge, stating the team will focus on winning each game individually.
