Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has reportedly advised the club’s ownership group, BlueCo, to prioritize the signing of Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero during the summer transfer window. The suggestion came during recent discussions between Fernandez and the owners regarding his own future at Stamford Bridge, according to Chelsea FC journalist Simon Phillips.
Fernandez joined Chelsea in 2023 and has quickly become a key player for the London club, establishing himself as a senior figure within the squad. The 25-year-old Argentina international is currently preparing for a change in management, with Xabi Alonso set to take over as Chelsea’s head coach from July.
While Fernandez’s long-term future at Chelsea remains somewhat uncertain, with interest from other top English clubs including Arsenal and Manchester City, he has actively engaged in conversations about the team’s potential reinforcements. Barcelona has also been linked with a move for the former Benfica player, who was a key component of Argentina’s 2022 World Cup-winning team and the 2024 Copa America squad.
Tottenham Hotspur, however, are reportedly open to selling their captain Romero at the end of the season, despite the player recently signing a new contract. TEAMtalk reports that Spurs will seek a fee in the region of £70-£80 million for the Argentine defender, which would make him the most expensive Argentine defender in history, surpassing Lisandro Martinez’s move to Manchester United. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are also said to be monitoring Romero’s situation.
The potential acquisition of Romero would significantly bolster Chelsea’s defensive options under Alonso, and Fernandez’s endorsement highlights the player’s quality and potential fit within the team. This move could signal a proactive approach from Chelsea in strengthening their squad ahead of the new season and competing for top honors.
