Galatasaray are seriously interested in signing Rafael Leao from AC Milan, according to reports in Italy. The Portuguese forward appears to have played his final game for the Rossoneri following a season where the club failed to qualify for the Champions League, and has reportedly indicated his desire to move on.
Milan are undergoing a significant restructuring following a disappointing campaign, with ownership deciding to dismiss CEO Furlani, sporting director Tare, scout Moncada, and manager Allegri. Oliver Glasner, formerly of Crystal Palace, has been appointed as the new head coach, but it appears Leao does not feature in his plans. The 25-year-old has been with Milan for seven years and is believed to feel his time at the club has come to an end.
Galatasaray are prepared to offer Leao a contract until June 30, 2030, worth €10 million per year. Negotiations with Milan are expected to begin next week, though the Italian club is seeking a substantial fee, albeit one lower than the significant release clause included in his most recent contract renewal. Leao’s priority remains a move to the Premier League, and he is currently awaiting offers from English clubs.
Leao is currently focused on international duty with Portugal at the upcoming World Cup. He has been named in Roberto Martinez’s squad for what is expected to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s final World Cup appearance. Portugal recently defeated Nigeria in a friendly, with Francisco Conceiçao scoring the winning goal. They begin their World Cup campaign against Congo on Wednesday, June 17th, followed by a match against Uzbekistan, coached by Fabio Cannavaro, on June 23rd, and conclude the group stage against Colombia.
Leao joined Milan from Lille in 2019 and has become a key player for the club, contributing significantly to their Serie A title win in 2022. He has a contract with Milan until June 30, 2028, giving the club a strong negotiating position, despite the player’s apparent desire to leave. A move to Galatasaray would represent a significant shift in Leao’s career, while a transfer to the Premier League would fulfill his stated ambition.
