Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini has outlined the club’s transfer strategy ahead of the new season, emphasizing the importance of the Friedkin ownership’s involvement in upcoming negotiations. Speaking to Radio Uno, Gasperini indicated that the transfer window will truly begin this week following a period of inactivity due to the World Cup.
The coach expressed optimism regarding the contract renewal of Paulo Dybala, stating that discussions will accelerate now that the summer break is concluding. However, he was more cautious when addressing the future of midfielder Manu Koné, suggesting his potential departure could be linked to the club’s financial obligations.
Koné enjoyed a strong first half of the season with Roma, but his form dipped in the second half, although he subsequently impressed while representing France at the World Cup. Gasperini acknowledged Koné’s quality and international success, but hinted that the club may need to sell players to balance its finances, with Koné potentially being the player sacrificed if necessary.
According to Gasperini, the club’s participation in the Champions League may provide sufficient financial leeway to retain Koné, but this remains uncertain. He stressed the importance of the Friedkin family’s presence in Rome for making swift decisions regarding player acquisitions and sales. The manager also touched on the potential for a Scudetto challenge, noting that Inter remains the favorite, but Roma aims to continue its progress and strengthen its position within the league.
Gasperini also briefly addressed the club’s plans for celebrating its centenary, deferring to the ownership and club management for details. He further commented on broader issues within Italian football, including the need for reform within the national team and a crackdown on simulation.
