Santiago Gimenez suffered an ankle injury during a recent international match against England, sidelining him for approximately six to eight weeks, and complicating potential transfer plans for AC Milan. The injury, a sprain, occurred after Gimenez had already undergone ankle surgery in December.
The arrival of Gonçalo Ramos at Milan has solidified his position as the club’s first-choice striker, a move that saw the Portuguese forward become the most expensive signing in the club’s history. This development leaves Gimenez in a precarious position, facing the prospect of limited playing time or a potential move elsewhere. While Milan would be open to selling Gimenez, the club still values him at around €20 million, reflecting his initial transfer fee.
Interest from other clubs has been lukewarm thus far, with Porto and Orlando City only making initial inquiries. Gimenez’s recent form has been a concern, having scored only one goal last season – in a Coppa Italia match against Lecce – and having had a largely unsuccessful World Cup campaign. His latest injury further diminishes his market value, making a sale at the desired price increasingly difficult.
A loan move has not been ruled out, despite Milan needing depth in attack due to their participation in three competitions. Youngster Francesco Camarda, recently returning from a challenging season at Lecce, could serve as a third-choice option, but the club may prefer him to gain more consistent playing time elsewhere. As a result, Gimenez may ultimately remain at Milan, though he will need to fully recover before being considered by manager Ruben Amorim.
