Jack Grealish has been given an unexpected opportunity to revive his Manchester City career after new head coach Enzo Maresca indicated he is open to keeping the England international at the Etihad, according to TEAMtalk.
Grealish had been widely expected to leave City permanently this summer following a loan spell at Everton, where he impressed before a season-ending foot injury. During his 18 Premier League starts for the Toffees, the winger registered six assists and two goals, becoming a key player for Sean Dyche’s side.
Everton had expressed continued interest in re-signing Grealish, potentially on another loan deal, especially with the player entering the final year of his contract at Manchester City. However, the departure of Pep Guardiola and the arrival of Maresca have significantly altered the landscape.
Maresca has informed the club that he wants to assess Grealish during pre-season and provide him with a chance to compete for a place in the squad, rather than immediately pursuing a sale. Sources suggest Maresca has long been an admirer of the former Aston Villa captain, having worked closely with him during his time as Guardiola’s assistant.
Maresca believes Grealish still possesses the qualities to make a significant contribution and feels the player has more to offer than he demonstrated in the latter stages of Guardiola’s tenure. The former City assistant manager oversaw a period where Grealish started 23 Premier League matches, contributing 12 goals and assists, establishing himself as a vital component of the attack.
Grealish has now completed his rehabilitation from the broken foot and is expected to return for pre-season training with the opportunity to impress the new manager. While Manchester City are not ruling out a transfer if a suitable offer emerges, the club’s position has softened following Maresca’s appointment.
This represents a second chance for Grealish at the Etihad, although he remains open to a return to Everton. A final decision regarding his future is not anticipated until later in the transfer window, a stark contrast to the near-certainty of his departure just weeks ago. The England international now has a genuine opportunity to reclaim a role in Manchester City’s plans, but interest from Everton and other clubs persists.
