Raphaël Guerreiro is poised to join AC Milan as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Borussia Dortmund, according to Tuttosport. The Portuguese international, who has spent the last decade in the Bundesliga with Dortmund and Bayern Munich, is reportedly being lined up as a potential replacement for Pervis Estupiñán at the San Siro.
Atlético Madrid had previously expressed interest in Guerreiro, but they have since secured the services of Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen, effectively ending their pursuit. Leverkusen themselves were also strongly linked with the 32-year-old at the end of last month, demonstrating the widespread interest in a player available on a free transfer.
Guerreiro’s future was recently uncertain, with reports suggesting he was considering early retirement due to recurring injuries. However, he now appears to be actively exploring options to continue his career with a new club. The left-back experienced a disappointing final match with Dortmund, missing out on the Bundesliga title, but he has enjoyed significant success in Germany, winning back-to-back league titles with Bayern Munich.
Born in France, Guerreiro has become a key figure for Portugal, playing a role in their triumph at the 2016 European Championship. He offers versatility, capable of playing as a full-back or in midfield, a quality that would be valuable to AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli. The move would bolster Milan’s options on the left side of defence, providing competition and depth as they aim to challenge for Serie A and Champions League honours.
No fee is involved in the transfer, given Guerreiro’s free agent status, and contract details have yet to be disclosed by either club. The potential arrival of Guerreiro represents a shrewd piece of business for AC Milan, adding an experienced and accomplished player to their squad without a transfer fee.
