Hervé Renard has been appointed as the new manager of the Tunisia national team, following the dismissal of Sabri Lamouchi after a heavy 5-1 defeat to Sweden in their opening match of the World Cup. The Tunisian Football Federation moved swiftly to replace Lamouchi, who had only been in the role for five months after being appointed in January.
Renard, known for his success in African football, is expected to join the team in Mexico ahead of their remaining group stage matches against Japan and the Netherlands. The timing is tight, with limited opportunity for preparation before crucial fixtures.
This managerial change makes Tunisia the fourth nation to change head coach during the current World Cup tournament, highlighting the pressure faced by national team managers during major competitions. Lamouchi’s departure comes after a disappointing performance against Sweden, leaving Tunisia with a significant challenge to qualify from a group also containing the Netherlands and Japan.
Renard brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously managed several African national teams, including Zambia and Ivory Coast, leading both to Africa Cup of Nations titles. He also managed the Morocco women's national team, demonstrating his versatility. His appointment is seen as an attempt to revitalize the team and salvage their World Cup campaign.
The Tunisian Football Federation hopes Renard can quickly instill a winning mentality and tactical approach to improve the team’s performance. While the task is daunting, Renard’s track record suggests he is capable of turning things around, though time is of the essence for the Eagles of Carthage.
