Hofmann confirms Leverkusen exit as contract talks stall
Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Jonas Hofmann has confirmed he will leave the Bundesliga club when his contract expires in 2027, or possibly sooner. The 31-year-old has stated that the club has informed him his current deal will not be extended beyond its 2027 expiry date.
Speaking to Sky Germany, Hofmann revealed the current situation, saying, "The club has told me that, at present, my contract will not be extended beyond 2027. That would mean next year will be my last in Leverkusen." The German international, who joined from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2023, is therefore set to become a free agent in the summer of 2027.
Despite being 34 when his contract ends, Hofmann, who will be 35, has no plans to retire. He dismissed the idea that his career is winding down, stating, "I feel in top shape. I'm full of energy, so I don't see it ending anytime soon." His comments suggest he is already considering his options for the 2027/28 season and beyond, with a move on a free transfer the most likely outcome.
The news indicates Leverkusen are planning for the future and are not looking to retain the 31-year-old winger into the twilight of his career. Hofmann, a key part of Leverkusen's historic domestic double-winning season in 2023/24, will be 35 when his current deal concludes, but his comments and recent form suggest he has no intention of retiring. His departure, whether in 2025, 2026, or upon expiry in 2027, will mark the end of a significant chapter for the experienced playmaker.
