Denis Huseinbašić has completed a permanent transfer from 1. FC Köln to SC Braga, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Wednesday.
The 24-year-old midfielder departs Köln after four years with the club, seeking increased playing time according to officials.
Köln’s managing director for sport, Thomas Kessler, explained the move, stating that Huseinbašić expressed a desire to leave due to limited opportunities in the recent season. Kessler confirmed the club reached an agreement with Braga and granted the player’s request, thanking him for his service and wishing him well. Huseinbašić himself expressed gratitude for the opportunity Köln provided, highlighting the trust he was given to begin his professional career.
Huseinbašić featured in 16 matches for Köln during the 2025/26 season, making nine starts. While a regular squad member, he wasn’t consistently in the starting eleven, prompting his search for a new challenge. Over his four seasons with the Billy Goats, the German midfielder amassed a total of 108 appearances, scoring eight goals and registering seven assists.
Huseinbašić initially joined Köln in 2022 from Dinamo Zagreb’s youth academy, developing into a versatile player capable of operating in multiple midfield positions. He became a fan favourite for his energetic performances and commitment to the club. Braga will offer Huseinbašić the chance to feature more prominently, potentially in European competition, as they look to strengthen their midfield options. This transfer allows Köln to free up squad space and potentially reinvest funds in other areas.
The move represents a new chapter for Huseinbašić, offering him a platform to further develop his career in Portugal’s Primeira Liga. Braga will hope to benefit from his dynamism and technical ability as they continue to compete at the top level.
