Chelsea are in the market for a third-choice goalkeeper as both Gabriel Slonina and Filip Jorgensen have indicated their desire to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, according to BBC Sport. The club is managing potential departures while simultaneously evaluating options for depth in the goalkeeping position ahead of Xabi Alonso’s first season as manager.
Gabriel Slonina, a United States international, is currently training with Chelsea’s sister club, Strasbourg, with a view to a possible move to Ligue 1. L’Equipe initially reported the training arrangement, and BBC Sport has since confirmed Slonina has expressed his wish for more regular playing time. A transfer to Strasbourg, whether on loan or permanently, is contingent on his performance in training under manager Hugo Oliveira.
Filip Jorgensen is also seeking a move away from Chelsea, with Strasbourg again a potential destination. However, BBC Sport reports that Jorgensen is less enthusiastic about joining the French club, who finished eighth in Ligue 1 and reached the UEFA Conference League semi-finals last season. Newly promoted Premier League side Coventry City, managed by Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, have also emerged as a possible option for the Denmark international.
Jorgensen arrived at Chelsea from Villarreal in July 2024, signing a seven-year contract for a reported fee of €23million (£20m). Despite the long-term commitment, he has struggled to displace Robert Sanchez as the first-choice goalkeeper, making only 36 appearances in the past two seasons. Slonina, who joined from Chicago Fire in August 2022, has yet to make a first-team appearance for Chelsea, having spent time on loan at KAS Eupen and Barnsley.
Chelsea also have Mike Penders, a highly-rated Belgium Under-21 international, within their goalkeeping ranks. Penders spent last season on loan at Strasbourg, making 50 appearances, and is expected to compete with Sanchez for a starting position under Alonso. He officially joined Chelsea from Genk in the summer of 2025 and was part of Belgium’s World Cup squad, though he did not feature in any matches. The potential departures of Slonina and Jorgensen would likely see Penders elevated further within the pecking order, providing Alonso with a clear second-choice option.
