Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford will return to Old Trafford following the conclusion of his loan spell with Barcelona, as the Spanish club have decided not to exercise their €30 million purchase option. The news comes as Barcelona have recently completed the signing of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for a reported €80 million.
Rashford has been with Barcelona since a loan deal was agreed last year, and has made a significant impact during his time in Catalonia, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, totaling 2,622 minutes on the pitch. However, according to Sky Sports, Manchester United have no intention of re-entering negotiations with Barcelona regarding another loan deal for the England international.
Rashford’s current contract with Manchester United runs until 2028, but he hasn’t featured for the club since December 2024. Prior to his spell with Barcelona, the 28-year-old had a loan stint with Aston Villa, demonstrating a willingness to seek regular playing time elsewhere. His time at Villa was less prolific than his recent form in Spain, but showed his adaptability to different leagues.
The decision not to pursue a permanent deal for Rashford comes after Barcelona secured Gordon, strengthening their attacking options. For Rashford, a return to Manchester United presents an opportunity to reintegrate into the squad, though his future role remains uncertain given the club’s existing attacking talent. His return could potentially provide manager Erik ten Hag with valuable depth and competition for places in the forward line.
