Manchester City are prepared to entertain offers for goalkeeper James Trafford this summer, according to TEAMtalk sources, with both Leeds United and Aston Villa expressing interest in the 23-year-old England international.
Club sources have indicated that bids are anticipated following the conclusion of the World Cup and subsequent movement in the transfer market. Trafford’s departure is considered likely as he is not expected to be first choice under new City manager Enzo Maresca and is seeking regular playing time.
Trafford was re-signed by Manchester City from Burnley for a reported £27 million last summer, but the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma quickly established the Italian as the club’s undisputed number one. Despite his potential, the club now believe a loan or permanent move would be beneficial for his development.
Leeds United are understood to view Trafford as a long-term solution in goal and have communicated their interest to both City’s hierarchy and the player’s representatives. However, they face competition from Aston Villa, who are also monitoring the situation.
Villa are considering Trafford as a potential replacement for Emiliano Martinez should the Argentinian goalkeeper depart this summer. Unai Emery’s side reportedly appreciate Trafford’s composure on the ball and his potential for growth. Manchester City will not prevent Trafford from leaving if a suitable offer is presented, valuing him between £35 million and £40 million.
Interest is also expected from clubs in Europe, with Newcastle United identified as long-term admirers. The expectation at the Etihad Stadium is that Trafford’s future lies away from the club, and further developments are anticipated as the transfer window progresses.
