Chelsea have received a significant indication regarding the future of Enzo Fernandez after Real Madrid president Florentino Perez announced plans for a €150 million transfer bid next week. Perez stated the offer will be made to a Champions League club for a player who currently does not compete in the Premier League.
Fernandez, 25, has been linked with a departure from Stamford Bridge for several months, reportedly expressing a desire to explore other opportunities following Argentina’s return from the World Cup. The midfielder hinted at a potential exit after Chelsea’s 8-2 aggregate defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of sixteen earlier this year, with reports suggesting he wishes to leave before the start of the next season.
Real Madrid have been consistently mentioned as potential suitors, and Fernandez is believed to be keen on a move to the Bernabeu. However, Perez’s recent comments, made during a campaign event ahead of Sunday’s presidential election, suggest a transfer may not materialize this summer. He revealed the club is preparing a record-breaking bid for a “top player” who is not currently playing in England.
Perez detailed the impending offer to ‘Horizonte’ (via Marca), stating, “On Tuesday, I'm going to make a significant offer to a Champions League club for a top player. It would be the largest transfer fee Real Madrid has ever paid… around €150 million.” He further clarified the target is not Crystal Palace’s Michael Olise, nor is it Jeremy Doku, and emphasized the player would ideally be a midfielder or forward, explicitly ruling out Erling Haaland and any player from the Premier League. He also confirmed the club will initiate discussions with the player’s current team.
With Perez confirming the substantial bid will not be for a Premier League-based player, a move for Fernandez appears increasingly unlikely. Real Madrid have already secured deals for Denzel Dumfries and Ibrahima Konate, and with a further €150 million potentially allocated to another high-profile signing, their financial capacity to also acquire Fernandez is questionable.
Chelsea are expected to demand a fee of at least €120 million for the Argentina international, and unless Real Madrid generate additional funds through player sales, a deal appears improbable. Manchester City have reportedly shifted their focus to Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali as midfield targets, while Paris Saint-Germain’s previous interest in Fernandez remains uncertain. This leaves a strong possibility that Fernandez will remain at Chelsea for the 2026-27 season.
