Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez has reportedly identified Monaco midfielder Paul Pogba as a key transfer target, with a potential offer of €150 million being prepared, according to reports emerging from France. Pérez announced his intention to pursue “a player who projects from midfield to attack” who currently plays for a Champions League club outside of the Premier League.
Speculation has been rife since the announcement, with several names being linked, including Michael Olise, Vitinha, João Neves, Enzo Doué, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. However, sources suggest the trail leads to a Ligue 1 player based in the south of France, and a World Cup winner. Pogba, despite a severely disrupted season with Monaco, appears to have caught the eye of the Real Madrid president.
Pogba joined Monaco in the summer of 2023, returning to the club where he began his professional career. His time back in Ligue 1 has been plagued by injury, managing just 115 minutes of league football this season. Prior to his move, Pogba spent six seasons with Juventus and a further six with Manchester United, establishing himself as one of the world’s leading midfielders. He was a key figure in France’s 2018 World Cup triumph.
Pérez, known for his penchant for ‘Galácticos’ and a history of bringing established stars to the Santiago Bernabéu, seemingly remains impressed by Pogba’s performances at the 2018 World Cup. The Real Madrid president also has a reputation for recycling players, as evidenced by the anticipated return of José Mourinho as manager. Reports indicate that defender Éder Militão has already offered to show Pogba around the club’s physiotherapy department, suggesting a welcoming atmosphere should the transfer materialize. The club has not yet confirmed any official bid or negotiations.
This potential move represents a significant gamble given Pogba’s recent injury record and lack of consistent playing time. However, if Pérez can secure the deal, it would signal Real Madrid’s intent to strengthen their midfield options and add a proven winner to their squad. It could also potentially allow for greater tactical flexibility for Mourinho upon his arrival.
