Newcastle United have signed goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen from Stade Reims for a fee of £24million, according to TEAMtalk. The 20-year-old France Under-21 international has agreed personal terms on a four-year contract with the Premier League club.
Jaouen has been a long-term target for Newcastle, with club officials closely monitoring his development throughout 2025. The player himself visited the North East earlier this year as discussions progressed, ultimately choosing the Magpies despite interest from several other clubs. Brighton, Tottenham Hotspur, and BlueCo, the ownership group behind Chelsea, were all reportedly in talks to sign the promising young goalkeeper.
BlueCo had initially planned to integrate Jaouen into their multi-club model with Strasbourg, but Newcastle successfully convinced him to join Eddie Howe’s squad. The move addresses a key area of recruitment for Newcastle this summer, providing competition and a long-term option in goal. It comes after the club decided against making Aaron Ramsdale’s loan deal permanent, with the goalkeeper returning to Southampton.
Jaouen is expected to challenge Nick Pope for the starting position. Newcastle are not ruling out further additions to their goalkeeping department before the transfer window closes, but the signing of Jaouen represents a significant step in strengthening the squad. The club’s project and the opportunity to develop under Howe at a high level were key factors in Jaouen’s decision, according to sources close to the deal.
The signing reflects Newcastle’s strategy of targeting young, elite talent under the leadership of Ross Wilson. This approach aims to build a squad capable of competing both domestically and in Europe. Newcastle are also actively pursuing a new winger following the sale of Anthony Gordon, and have reportedly submitted a bid for an 18-year-old currently at Brighton.
