Matteo Cocchi, the 19-year-old left-back, made his Serie A debut for Inter against Bologna on Wednesday, marking a significant moment for both the player and his family. Cocchi’s appearance at the Stadio Dall’Ara, roughly an hour from his hometown of Molinella, fulfilled a dream for a family steeped in Bologna football history, with his grandfather Claudio being a former idol for the club and his father, Edgardo, having played for the Rossoblù under Davide Ballardini.
Cocchi initially joined Inter from Bologna in 2021, having progressed through the Rossoblù youth system where his father won a youth Scudetto as a goalkeeper in 1989. While initially deployed in several attacking positions, he was eventually converted to a left-back, a role he has embraced and developed under the guidance of Inter coaches. He has been compared to Federico Dimarco, Inter’s established left-back, and has clearly impressed enough to earn a long-term commitment from the Nerazzurri.
Inter have moved to secure Cocchi’s future, extending his contract until 2030, demonstrating the club’s faith in his potential. He previously made his professional debut for Inter in the Champions League against Feyenoord last season, and was a key player for Inter’s Primavera side this season, contributing one goal and two assists in Serie C under coach Cristian Vecchi. Inter coach Simone Inzaghi and Primavera coach Francesco Chivu have both praised Cocchi’s quality and integration into the first-team setup.
Cocchi’s debut was made all the more special by the personal significance of playing near his hometown and the presence of his family in the stands. He has several tattoos that represent important aspects of his life, including a rose for his sister, his two dogs, the number 3, and a lighthouse. The young player’s emergence provides Inter with further depth at left-back and represents a successful development from their youth academy. His long-term contract extension signals Inter’s intent to build for the future with promising young talent.
