AC Milan is preparing for significant changes in its leadership structure, with current CEO Giorgio Furlani expected to depart the club, according to reports in Italy. Owner Gerry Cardinale is due to arrive at San Siro and is driving a restructuring of the club’s management, with Massimo Calvelli, RedBird’s representative, tasked with forming a new organizational chart.
Furlani’s exit appears imminent, though the exact timing – whether he resigns or is removed by ownership – remains unclear. The decision comes amid mounting criticism of his performance, though personal motivations are also reportedly contributing to the change. Calvelli is currently evaluating potential replacements, with candidates from within Italy including Giovanni Carnevali of Sassuolo and Claudio Fenucci of Bologna being considered. Veteran administrator Adriano Galliani has also been mentioned, potentially in a consultancy role, alongside exploring options from abroad, mirroring the appointment of Marco Gazidis in 2018.
The future of sporting director Igli Tare is also uncertain, though his position may be more secure than initially anticipated. While previously expected to leave following disagreements with Furlani, Cardinale’s recent criticism of transfer spending doesn't necessarily fall at Tare’s feet, as some successful acquisitions predated recent decisions. Support from coach Massimiliano Allegri and goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who reportedly urged Tare to stay, may also be influencing the situation. Ultimately, Tare’s fate is likely tied to the vision of the incoming CEO.
Zlatan Ibrahimović, currently a senior advisor to RedBird, is seeking increased influence within the club. However, his availability will be limited in the coming months due to his commitment as a commentator for the World Cup. The relationship between Ibrahimović and Allegri, whom Cardinale intends to retain as coach, is also a factor, with Allegri currently being courted by Napoli. Allegri’s continued employment is contingent on Champions League qualification and assurances of adequate investment in the transfer market. The head scout, Moncada, linked to Ibrahimović, is also attracting interest from clubs like Nice and Sevilla.
Finally, speculation continues regarding potential minority investors in Milan. Following previous reports about the Ellison family, Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Crociere, has been linked with a possible stake. Both RedBird and MSC have denied these rumors.
