Liverpool are reportedly prioritizing the appointment of Andoni Iraola as their new head coach following the unexpected dismissal of Arne Slot on Saturday, according to TEAMtalk. The move to remove Slot has surprised many, coming despite initial indications from the Anfield hierarchy that the Dutchman would be afforded time to implement his vision after a season of underwhelming results.
Sources indicate Liverpool’s leadership were dissatisfied with the team’s finish to the 2025/26 campaign and harbored concerns regarding Slot’s plans for restructuring the backroom staff. These issues ultimately led to the decision to seek a new manager. Sporting director Richard Hughes and other senior club figures engaged in discussions on Friday and Saturday, culminating in the decision to part ways with Slot.
Iraola, currently managing Bournemouth, has emerged as the club’s primary target. Hughes is familiar with Iraola’s work, having previously brought him to the Cherries, and preliminary discussions have already taken place. However, Liverpool are aware that Iraola is also a candidate for the vacant managerial position at Bayer Leverkusen, necessitating a swift approach to secure his services.
TEAMtalk reports that Liverpool was among Iraola’s preferred destinations should he leave Bournemouth, presenting a potentially attractive opportunity for the Basque tactician. While Julian Nagelsmann and Sebastian Hoeness were briefly considered, the club has seemingly settled on Iraola as their top choice, recognizing his success in guiding Bournemouth to European competition for the first time in their history. The rapid change at the top suggests Liverpool are keen to act decisively to reset and move forward.
Following Slot’s departure, FSG released a statement expressing gratitude for his contributions, highlighting his Premier League title win and his leadership during a challenging period for the club. The statement emphasized the need for a “change of direction” to ensure continued progress, acknowledging that the decision was not taken lightly. Slot’s legacy at Anfield, particularly delivering the club’s 20th league title, will be remembered fondly.
