Liverpool have cooled their interest in Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, according to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke. The change in approach comes at the behest of new Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, who is prioritizing alternative targets in midfield.
Liverpool had previously been heavily linked with a move for the 22-year-old Wharton, and were reportedly prepared to pay over £70 million to secure his signature. The Reds saw Wharton as a potential replacement for Curtis Jones, whose future at Anfield is uncertain following stalled contract negotiations. However, Iraola does not currently view Wharton as a priority signing as he assesses the existing squad and explores other options.
Wharton has been a standout performer for Crystal Palace, playing a key role in their recent FA Cup and Conference League successes. His performances have attracted attention from several high-profile clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur, but with Liverpool stepping back, Palace are now increasingly confident of retaining his services. Tottenham’s interest has also waned following significant investment in other areas of their squad, with the combined cost of Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali reaching £185 million.
The shift in Liverpool’s transfer strategy suggests Iraola is keen to implement his own ideas and identify players who specifically fit his tactical vision. While additions in attacking positions remain a focus, particularly with the potential departures of Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa alongside Mohamed Salah’s confirmed exit, the midfield situation is now less clear. This change in direction could open the door for other clubs to pursue Wharton, or prompt Liverpool to refocus their attention on different midfield targets.
