Andoni Iraola has been named the new manager of Liverpool, the club confirmed on Wednesday. The Spaniard arrives from Bournemouth, where he oversaw three seasons in the Premier League, achieving finishes of 12th, 9th, and 6th, culminating in European qualification for the first time in the club’s history.
Chelsea also held talks with Iraola, but ultimately appointed Xabi Alonso as their new manager last month. According to The Athletic, Chelsea’s decision stemmed from concerns that Iraola’s high-intensity, front-foot style of play would represent too significant a departure from the systems implemented by previous managers Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior, a style they believe better suits their current squad.
Liverpool, however, specifically sought a manager who would reinstate the aggressive, attacking football that characterized Jurgen Klopp’s successful tenure, a style that Arne Slot, Klopp’s immediate predecessor, moved away from. FSG, Liverpool’s owners, reportedly dismissed the possibility of pursuing Alonso once they recognized the stylistic differences.
Iraola also attracted interest from AC Milan, who identified him as their top target to replace Massimiliano Allegri. Discussions progressed to an advanced stage, but were ultimately frustrated by Iraola’s holiday plans coinciding with a crucial period in negotiations. It is understood that the opportunity to manage Liverpool quickly became Iraola’s priority. Several other clubs, including Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen, also expressed interest in the manager.
Reports suggest Iraola may look to bring some familiar faces to Anfield, and the appointment could lead to changes within the current Liverpool squad, with some players potentially being deemed surplus to requirements. The change in management signals a clear shift in tactical approach for the Merseyside club.
