Juventus are reportedly interested in signing Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid, according to Marca. The potential move is contingent on the departure of Andrea Cambiaso, whose future at the club is uncertain following a mixed season. Juventus are already in talks with Atletico Madrid regarding other players, including Alexander Sorloth and Nico Gonzalez, potentially easing negotiations.
Ruggeri arrived at Atletico Madrid last summer and featured prominently for the Spanish side, making 47 appearances across all competitions and providing seven assists. He particularly impressed during the Champions League quarter-final ties against Barcelona, effectively limiting the impact of Lamine Yamal and contributing to Atletico’s progression to the semi-finals. Despite his positive performances, Ruggeri’s future is not secure as Atletico Madrid are pursuing Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella to strengthen their left-back options.
Should Atletico Madrid successfully acquire Cucurella, they may be open to selling Ruggeri, who is valued at between €20-25 million. This could facilitate a swift return to Serie A for the 23-year-old, just one year after leaving Atalanta. Juventus are considered capable of meeting both the transfer fee and Ruggeri’s wage demands, which are reported to be just over €2 million plus bonuses.
Roma have also expressed interest in Ruggeri, with manager Gian Piero Gasperini, who previously coached the player at Atalanta, keen on reuniting with him. Gasperini launched Ruggeri during his time at Atalanta, where the player made 109 appearances, scoring twice and providing ten assists, and won the Europa League in the 2023/24 season. The potential for a move to Roma could see the two reunite, adding another dimension to the competition for Ruggeri’s signature. Juventus’ existing negotiations with Atletico Madrid could give them an advantage in securing the player.
