Kasper Schmeichel has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 37, following a serious shoulder injury sustained in February while playing for Celtic. The Danish goalkeeper revealed the decision came after consulting with multiple surgeons and specialists, who advised him against attempting a return to the highest level of competition. Schmeichel shared the news with Danish television channel TV2.
Son of Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel, the younger Schmeichel forged his own successful career, most notably during a decade with Leicester City from 2011 to 2022. He was a key figure in Leicester’s remarkable Premier League title win in 2016, a triumph that shocked the footballing world. Prior to joining Celtic, Schmeichel also had spells with OGC Nice and Anderlecht.
Schmeichel earned 120 caps for Denmark, making him the fifth most-capped player in the nation’s history. He featured in six matches during Denmark’s impressive run to the semi-finals of Euro 2020, and his last international appearance came in a 4-2 defeat to Scotland in November 2023. His retirement marks the end of an era for Danish football, losing a long-serving and respected player.
Celtic recently secured the Scottish Premiership title, a feat Schmeichel contributed to during his time at the club, though his season was cut short by the shoulder injury. The injury effectively ended his playing career, leading to this difficult decision. Schmeichel’s absence will be felt both on and off the pitch, as he was known for his leadership and experience. His career represents a significant achievement, stepping out of the shadow of his father to become a celebrated goalkeeper in his own right.
