Jürgen Klopp has reached an agreement in principle to become the next manager of the Germany national team, according to a statement released by the German Football Association (DFB) on Saturday. DFB president Bernd Neuendorf and vice-president Hans-Joachim Watzke held discussions with the former Liverpool manager in New York on Friday, resulting in an accord on the key terms of a potential contract.
However, the deal is contingent on Red Bull releasing Klopp from his current contract. He currently holds the position of global football director within the Red Bull organisation, and their approval is required for him to take the Germany job. The DFB expressed confidence that negotiations with Red Bull will be successful, stating both parties are optimistic about reaching a final agreement.
This potential appointment comes after Julian Nagelsmann was dismissed as Germany manager following their disappointing round of 16 exit at the World Cup, losing to Paraguay on penalties. Nagelsmann’s departure created a vacancy that the DFB has been seeking to fill, and Klopp has emerged as their primary target.
Klopp has been out of club management since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 season, where he enjoyed a hugely successful nine-year spell, winning the Premier League and Champions League amongst other trophies. He has not taken another position in football since, focusing on family and personal commitments, but has remained a highly sought-after figure. His return to football with the national team would be a significant boost for Germany, who are co-hosts of Euro 2024.
Should Klopp officially take the reins, he will be tasked with revitalising the German national team and leading them to success on home soil next summer. The appointment would signal a clear ambition from the DFB to bring in a world-class manager capable of inspiring a new generation of players.
