Jürgen Klopp is expected to sign a contract to become the new head coach of the Germany national team, running until 2030, according to Sky Germany. The agreement is anticipated to be finalised following final negotiations scheduled to take place in New York this weekend between Klopp and the German Football Association (DFB). This appointment follows the recent departure of Julian Nagelsmann from the Germany role.
Nagelsmann stepped down as head coach earlier this year, prompting the DFB to initiate discussions with Klopp as a potential replacement. The 56-year-old Klopp recently concluded his nine-year tenure at Liverpool, where he established himself as one of the most successful managers in the club’s history, winning the Premier League, Champions League, and other major honours. His departure from Anfield at the end of the 2023-24 season left a vacancy in the managerial landscape, and he subsequently took on a role as Head of Global Soccer at Red Bull.
Sky Germany reports that Klopp’s exit from Red Bull is now considered a formality, contingent upon reaching a full agreement with the DFB. He initially took up the position with Red Bull in January 2025, a role that appeared to signal a step back from the intense demands of club management. However, the opportunity to lead his national team appears to have proven too appealing for the experienced coach.
The timing of this appointment is crucial for Germany, as they prepare to host the European Championships in 2024 and will be looking to rebuild following recent underwhelming performances on the international stage. Klopp’s proven track record of developing teams and inspiring players will be seen as vital in restoring Germany’s status as a major force in international football. His tactical acumen and motivational skills are highly regarded throughout the game, and he is expected to bring a new level of intensity and direction to the national team setup. This move allows Klopp to return to management at the highest level, while providing Germany with a highly respected figure to lead their national team forward.
