Koke has signed a one-year contract extension with Atlético de Madrid, the club announced on Tuesday, following the arrival of Alejandro Grimaldo. The midfielder first joined the club’s youth system at the age of eight, progressing to the first team in 2009. Thirteen years later, he is the club’s all-time appearance leader.
Koke has made 740 official appearances for Atlético, missing only five matches last season, playing in 56 games. At 34 years old, the captain under Diego Simeone is the only current player to have been with the club since the manager’s arrival in December 2011. His continued presence provides significant stability and experience within the squad.
The Spain international, who has 70 caps for his country but hasn’t featured for La Roja since the 2022 World Cup, has won eight trophies with Atlético Madrid: two La Liga titles (2014, 2021), two Europa League titles (2012, 2018), two UEFA Super Cups (2012, 2018), one Copa del Rey (2013), and one Spanish Super Cup (2014). These successes have cemented his legendary status amongst the club’s supporters.
Atlético Madrid are reportedly preparing a complaint against FC Barcelona regarding Julián Álvarez, with suggestions the club fears losing the player. This contract extension for Koke, however, offers a moment of positive news for the Colchoneros as they navigate potential departures and continue to build under Simeone. The club views Koke as integral to its identity and future ambitions, and this extension ensures his leadership remains for at least another season. His commitment reinforces the club’s core values and provides a strong role model for younger players.
