Felipe Chávez will return to Bayern Munich at the end of his loan spell with 1. FC Köln, the Bundesliga club confirmed on Thursday. Köln have decided against triggering the purchase option included in the agreement that brought the 19-year-old midfielder to the RheinEnergieStadion in January.
Chávez joined Köln seeking regular first-team football to continue his development, but made only seven appearances for the Billy Goats, accumulating a total of 96 minutes on the pitch. He featured in a variety of Bundesliga matches, primarily as a substitute, but did not establish himself as a consistent starter under coach Timo Schultz.
The Peru international progressed through the Bayern Munich academy, making his debut for the senior team in 2022. He has since featured twice for Bayern’s first team, demonstrating his potential within the club’s system. However, opportunities for consistent playing time remain limited in a competitive Bayern midfield.
Bayern Munich currently have a wealth of midfield options, including Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, and Jamal Musiala. Chávez’s contract with the Bavarian giants runs until the summer of 2027, indicating the club’s continued belief in his long-term potential. His return to Munich will likely see him integrated back into the reserve team setup, where he can continue to hone his skills and compete for future opportunities with the senior squad.
Köln, meanwhile, will likely pursue alternative midfield targets during the summer transfer window. The club finished 16th in the Bundesliga last season, narrowly avoiding relegation, and will be looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming campaign. The decision not to sign Chávez permanently allows them to allocate resources to other areas of the team.
