Köln have confirmed that defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey was omitted from the matchday squad for their recent 3-1 defeat to Heidenheim due to disciplinary reasons, according to a club statement. Interim coach René Wagner explained the decision stemmed from a breach of team rules regarding punctuality, emphasizing the importance of consistency within the squad.
The 20-year-old Simpson-Pusey arrived at Köln on loan from Manchester City in January and has made 10 appearances for the Bundesliga side. His parent club had previously ended his loan spell at Celtic to facilitate the move to Germany, demonstrating a willingness to broaden his first-team experience. Prior to his loan spells, Simpson-Pusey captained Manchester City’s youth teams to success in both the FA Youth Cup and the U21 Premier League.
Despite the disciplinary issue, Wagner indicated that Simpson-Pusey has apologized and is likely to be considered for selection in Köln’s final match of the season against Bayern Munich. Wagner stated that he had a “good conversation” with the player and believes the incident is a learning experience. The club are currently considering whether to activate an €8 million purchase option to make the loan permanent.
Köln’s recent form has been poor, and the defeat to Heidenheim has increased the pressure on the club to make the right decisions in the transfer market. The decision on Simpson-Pusey’s future will be a key one, as he represents a promising young talent with potential for further development. Should Köln opt to sign him permanently, it would signal a commitment to building a youthful core within the team.
