France midfielder Manu Kone has stated his focus remains solely on the upcoming World Cup, despite growing speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal. The 25-year-old has impressed since joining Roma from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2024, playing a key role in their third-place finish in Serie A last season.
According to French publication L’Equipe, Arsenal are interested in acquiring Kone, seeking a versatile midfielder capable of playing both as a No. 6 and a No. 8. This aligns with reports from BBC Sport detailing the Gunners’ desire for a player with that specific skillset. However, Kone has downplayed the transfer talk, emphasizing his commitment to the French national team. He told Italian outlet Gazzetta dello Sport, via Fabrizio Romano, “I am focused on the World Cup. After that, we will see what happens.”
Roma may be compelled to sell players this summer to meet financial fair play regulations. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini acknowledged the possibility of losing key players, stating in May that “modern football” rarely features truly unsellable players, particularly outside of the world’s elite clubs. He conceded that “unmissable offers” could lead to departures, though he expressed hope that Kone would remain with the club. Gasperini suggested that a significant offer could benefit both the player and Roma.
Kone appeared in 37 games across all competitions for Roma last season, scoring two goals and providing three assists. Arsenal had also been linked with West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, but The Times reports that the 21-year-old is now expected to join Manchester United for a fee of €92 million (£80m). West Ham are under pressure to generate funds following their relegation from the Premier League. The potential departure of Fernandes may refocus Arsenal’s attention on Kone, should they continue to pursue a midfield reinforcement.
